Daniel Cafiero, Service leader at Stony Brook University

We asked Danny, our service leader from  State University of New York at Stony Brook, a few questions about his position at the prestigious campus.

((From Left to Right) Daniel Cafiero and  Assistant Team Leader, Wayne Anderson.)

Q: What's your favorite part about your job?

A: I think what I enjoy most about my job is, that each day brings something new. It is NEVER boring! I love that the work we do at the University is instantly noticeable, and visible to all. Instant gratification, so to speak. From time to time, we are asked to design new planting beds, and install hardscapes around campus. It's exciting to see our designs come to fruition, and receive accolades from students and staff, alike. Some people perform jobs where they are expected to do the same chore, day in and day out. In our field, no two days are alike. You have to learn to expect the unexpected. New challenges abound!

Q: What sorts of experiences have prepared you for the job of S.B.U.'s magnitude?

A: I find our biggest challenge at S.B.U. is time management. Stony Brook is an enormous campus, and obviously there is a lot of ground to cover. Having worked many years in retail management, my experiences with scheduling and communication have been extremely helpful. Very often we have crews working in more than one area on campus, as there is a lot that needs attention. We try to keep with a strict schedule, but sometimes emergencies, or special requests arise, and we are most definitely able to roll with the punches.

Also, I find that communication is pertinent to running our operation smoothly at Stony Brook University. Terranova has a very good working relationship with the staff at S.B.U., and customer service is key to us. Keeping the lines of communication open with the staff and understanding the needs of the school, we are able to execute our work properly and go above and beyond what they ask for.

Q: What makes you the most proud to be involved with this project and Terranova?

A: I just recently began working for Terranova Landscapes back in April of this year. I am proud to work for a company that cares so much about their employees as they do their clients, and their community. Terranova holds weekly safety meetings for employees to ensure that everyone is safe when they are out on the road and on a job. I am also proud of the fact that Terranova supports such groups as NYSID, and Children's Miracle Network, and gives back to the community. Working for this company, and having Stony Brook University, as a vehicle to showcase our talents is a wonderful opportunity, and one that I am extremely proud to be a part of.

(Terranova Employees wear bright orange for safety)

In the landscaping industry, safety is the most important trend to keep up with.  No matter how much experience the operator has, the scale of equipment that we handle on a day to day basis must be handled with extreme caution and respect. It is unfortunate that so many injuries we encounter can be avoided but the most important aspect of our business is that we are capable of growing and improving our safety measures to keep things moving efficiently and effectively as well as SAFELY. Terranova appreciates the importance of safety and remains diligent on updating our methods of safe operation and servicing our teams so that we are operating with the highest level of caution.

Safety tip:When working outside, it is important to always be aware of your surroundings. This goes for homeowners and landscapers alike. Don't ever assume because you're riding a big red lawnmower or holding a noisy blower that cars see you. Use caution when working near roads and pay attention to your surroundings! Accidents happen in the seconds we always wish we can take back!
